1) Point and shoots/pocket cams are designed for easy use and are smartly programmed to do most of the “thinking” for you.  Allow them to.

2) Your Options- Simply operate in Auto or Program mode for casual shooting when travelling, taking photos around town and other circumstances under well lit conditions.

3) Scene Mode- this is a great feature that acts to automatically prioritize aperture or shutter priority based on your subject.  Turn the dial to scene mode, look over the menu & choose your setting.  Portrait of the kids?  Choose it.  Landscape?  Choose it.  Sunset?  Choose it.  It’s that easy.

During a private lesson last night I was reminded that advances in technology have hybridized the Point and Shoot with the DSLR when my client needed help with a handy Nikon Coolpix.  Mostly he just wanted to “take pictures” but knew from time to time he’d like to switch away from P or Auto mode and was confused about A, S & M modes.  When I pointed out the well designed options under Scene mode both his enthusiasm and understanding lifted noticeably.  Keep it simple & enjoy your camera. Can I help?… Gordon.
