SWFL, There’s No Oil Here…
…and there hasn’t been. After speaking with business people along Florida’s Gulf Coast and hearing them lament that the media has created an entirely false impression of things I’m going to do my part to report the truth! The truth is the beaches, birds, coast and water are all oil free and being off season, less crowded too! In fact it’s an outstanding place to be.
We headed over to Naples beach last night, dinner in tow and as I took a stroll afterward with the camera more for fun than profit, the absolute and very normal pristine condition of the place asserted itself. People enjoying the warm water, optimistic fishermen trying their hands, gulls, pelicans and terns diving with abandon on plentiful bait fish- it was all there.

Live welk thriving in SWFL's clean, oil free water.
The live welk pictured here caught my eye. Nearly stranded alone by low tide but bathed in shallow crystal clear water it literally spurred this post. For shots like this, simple advice would be to get your camera down low as possible without endangering it with salt water, decide if any shadows can be eliminated via flash, open up the aperture to soften the background and take a few photos.
It rained again yesterday and the lingering clouds set up another super sunset, making for great beach photography. A memorable night! When taking pictures late like this its fun to frame a few images in the warm evening light then switch over to silhouettes once the sun really sinks or sets totally. Remember to utilize a tripod if you’re shooting with a big telephoto or zoom lens and be prepared to increase your ISO setting as it gets darker.
Hopefully the word is getting back out that Florida is in good shape and open for business. Who else can I tell? Who can you share the concept with?
