“Do You See It?”…

Palm with a different perspective by www.swfloutdoorphotography.com.

Last Monday we looked at the ins and outs of the wide angle lens and showed the look that certain gear can lend to photos while learning the associated pluses and minuses.  Today we’ll re examine the concept of angle but as it applies to composition and shooting.  One easy way to take better pictures-

Sometimes even the most interesting subject can become boring to view and a sleeper to photograph if the perspective never changes.  One easy way to overcome that is by forcing yourself to “see” the image differently and to try shooting accordingly.  Everything in life is habit forming so it may require extra effort to break new ground with your camera but usually worth it.

Try this- pick an attractive subject and refuse to shoot the way you normally would.  Instead change your vantage point to establish a sharp angle by looking up or down for example.  Suddenly you have a “whole new subject”.  Now if you’d normally hold your camera horizontally (landscape position) try vertically (portrait position).

Look at the difference between the two palms here.  One captivating but still common, the other new and fresh.  Try it!  To see more examples of shooting from several different perspectives and the effect it has on pictures, check out my coverage of the of the Susan G. Komen  Race for a Cure event on Saturday.  Can you see how this might help your photography?

Tomorrow I join friends for a nature shoot in a new spot then Tuesday its back to the Everglades for another instructional excursion before “Birds of Florida” and “Don’t leave home without it” later this week.  Gordon.
