Digital Cameras, ‘Tis The Season…

… for smart shopping and lots of discounts.  Recently I’ve fielded a few questions along the lines of “what camera should I buy”?  The answer while simple does have a lot of moving parts- buy the equipment that will help you take the type of pictures you prefer.  Under some conditions a pocket sized point and shoot digicam will take just as impressive a picture as a top of the line SLR selling for thousands but the latter will help the skilled photographer get many different superior results under virtually any lighting condition.  Here are “Gordon’s suggestions” for smart shopping a digital camera:

Educate yourself- talk to friends, take a class and read up.  Online dpreview is one of the best sources for comparing cameras and getting the facts.  Spend some time here before you open your wallet.  B&H Photo in New York is a premier retailer with excellent advice if you’re in the city or willing to buy long distance.

Discounts abound-I’ve been getting emails from Nikon and Ritz almost daily  promoting new offerings and holiday specials.  Also check Amazon.com. They key is to determine what you need before you buy.  If simple family, party or vacation shots is your thing, a $150.00 pocket cam will do the trick with surprising results.  If birds, wildlife, sports, real travel photography and more is the goal, better invest in an SLR and extra lenses, but do your homework first- ask lots of questions.

Digital photography ranks as one of the all time great pursuits, one to be practiced anywhere and at any age.  Here in SWFL we have 365 days a year of comfortable conditions and enticing scenes so do your homework and get started.  Contact me if I can help with questions before you buy or with instruction afterward.  Later this week, “birds of Florida” and more…
