Birds of Florida, Wilson’s Plover
We’re getting more into those little birds who all ”look the same” that you see scurrying along our beaches, sandbars and mudflats. Want to sound real smart at your next cocktail party thrown by fellow birders? Keep learning our shore birds like the Wilson’s Plover:
Interesting History-
This semi petite shorebird is named for the extremely fascinating and very shady Alexander Wilson. For our purposes, those who wish to extend their avian photography towards smaller specimens will take note that the Wilson’s Plover sports a single black band or ring below the neck, has yellow legs and a black bill just a tad longer than similar species. Tip: carry your field guide….
Where & When & How-
Like many of the recently covered species virtually any of the above described habitat will offer a shot at this one. My favorite for coastal bird photography is there area around Marco Island’s Tiger Tail Beach but don’t let that limit you if you’re far away. From now through mid Winter more and more migrants like this one will grace our local habitat driven by cold, shorter days and lunar cycles to from Northern tundras to Southwest Florida. Your best photos will come from a low shooting angle and ideally feature a nice reflection in the water or an interesting textured flat like in the photo here. This is a small specimen so a big zoom lens and patience will pay off. At least you’ll be able to casually mention your familiarity with our smallest of species as the Pinot splashes into your glass.
Throughout the next 6 months I’ll lead many bird photography “safaris” to local hot spots so get in contact now if you’d like to learn more on bird ID plus the best time and places for producing great pictures all with old fashioned hands on help.

For two points in this week’s regular reader contest, how many Egrets have been featured in this blog? A 16×20 limited edition canvas is up for grabs. Last week’s answer: the Little Blue Heron. Did you get that one? More on Alexander Wilson.
