“Birds of Florida, Common Moorhen”…
… another interesting waterbird that may be making itself available for portraits right behind the house. Chances are you’ve seen this dark gray paddler as it inches along vegetated shorelines in local ponds, canals and marshes. Photograph the Common Moorhen-

1- We’ve mentioned their very specific habitat-marshy, well vegetated waterways especially where cattails are present (Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds) so finding them is relatively easy and the ones that reside in community ponds are often easily approached by the stealthy photographer.
2- Get a nice level shooting angle and really go for portraits or closeups. Why? The moorhen’s almost solid gray color is punctuated by what is known as a red facial shield and bill, the latter of which is brilliantly brilliantly tipped in yellow. And unmistakable.
3- Those with a determined interest in bird photography will add another individually unique specimen to their collection with this one. One more interesting bit of trivia also from the Audubon Field Guide-the males equip the females with a series of nests fashioned just above the waterline which act as nightly “dormitories” for the growing brood.
