“Birds of Florida, American Coot”…

American Coot photographed in a fresh water marsh along the Great Florida Birding Trail by www.swfloutdoorphotography.com.
… the third in a family that includes the common moorhen & purple gallinule, covered previously. To complete the trifecta and photograph this waterbird, let’s look at the American Coot-
1- They’re a grayish black and sport a solid white bill and red eye making them unmistakable.
2- Easy to find they’re common in fresh and saltwater often in large flocks.
3- You’ll often spot them diving for an omnivorous diet of aquatic animal and plant life.
Bird photography in itself is interesting especially when it involves wetlands as a mixed bag is always possible. The coot is really a nondescript bird with the exception of the eye and bill but worth adding to your collection . Your best photographs may be of a feeding flock set in a scenic marshland. So if your quest is to photograph egrets, herons and other denizens of the waterways keep an eye open for a nicely lit flock of American Coot too.
Speaking of bird photography, we’ve got one spot of just five open Friday where we’ll spend at least four hours photographing wading birds, beachscapes, ospreys and burrowing owls. If you’ve ever thought about a guided nature photography excursion, I think you’d enjoy it, inquire about details. Have a great week until we meet again before the weekend, Gordon.
